The Pros & Cons of Chalky Finish Spray Paint

I was so excited when I found out that Krylon made a chalky finish spray paint and then even MORE excited when I found some at our local Home Hardware. Talk about the best of both worlds, two of my favorite things all rolled into one can.

Last week I finally had to the chance to try it out & I have to say that I’m a fan. Before I get into the nitty gritty, this is not a sponsored post, I just want to share with you my thoughts on my new fave way to chalk paint!

I picked up a couple of cans of chalky finish Paver Gray and used it on two chair frames. I had sanded some area’s down to smooth out some knicks and dents but otherwise you treat it as regular chalk paint and no prep is required prior.

The consistency is very thin compared to regular chalk paint, this is a given though seeing as it’s spray paint (duh). So when the can advises you to do thin coats and not get too heavy handed, they mean it, otherwise you’ll end up with this:

Yeah….not so nice is it. Definitely a bit on the runny side. On the upside though, it sands down incredibly well and doesn’t get gummy like regular spray paint sometimes can. Another huge difference I noticed was the odor, it’s pretty smelly & has that chemical smell to it. You’ll want to make sure that you have some good ventilation going on, or you’ll end up with an unexpected high!

It took me a can and a half to cover two chairs and it covered quite well. A couple of the sanded area’s sucked up the paint a little more then the rest but you can’t tell at all. It dries fast with an ultra matte and smooth finish, no brush marks, no streaking, nada!

At around $12.99/can though it could start to get quite costly if you’re doing a larger project such as a larger piece of furniture. It was perfect for the chair frames I did and would work so well on any other smaller items that need new life breathed into them.

Here’s how the chair frame turned out:

So smooth and fresh and clean looking, right?!

They offer a line of fairly neutral colours, although Amazon has a better selection than in store. I can’t wait to try more out on some Christmas projects!
