All Hale That Damn Door

Hey hey! If you’ve been hanging around for a bit, you’ll remember I painted one of our interior doors a beautiful blue called Thunderbird Blue.

Well, back in November, we were having some friends over before we headed out for a comedy night. Instead of tidying the house I painted that damn door. My intentions were to actually paint our exterior door, but then Mother Nature went all cray cray on me and it was too cold. So I had to satisfy my painting itch somehow. It actually gave me some time to think about whether or not I should get in touch with a service similar to Kelly Window & Door and have the exterior door replaced for another design but I haven’t really made up my mind about that yet.

If you’ve never painted interior doors before, do not be afraid! It’s super simple and I’m going to show you how.

Prep your door beforehand. If it’s never been primed before then use the guide below to prime it first. Otherwise a good wash with some diluted TSP will do the trick.

I removed my door handle just to make it easier to paint, but if you want to leave it on and mask around it you definitely can. Using a brush start with the beveled edges in your door as shown in the photo below.

Make sure you aren’t using too much paint as it will build up in your corners and give you a dirty drip. Dried drips aren’t fun.

I like to use a small roller for the rest of the door. Following the grain (if you have) paint the flat panel within the beveled edge. Once that is done move to the cross section of the door. Again follow the wood grain of your doors if needed. Lastly, move to the outer edges that frame your panels and paint those.

You’ll need to do two coats of paint in order to get a uniform look. Once your door has completely dried then you can put your hardware back on.

I love love LOVE this color. It definitely gives it a different look than the Thunderbird Blue (which is also Benjamin Moore) did. The best part about painting the door is that it takes no time to change up if you ever get bored of the existing color. The only difference between this paint job and my last, is that I did the front and back this time around. When I painted the door initially I only did the front that faced our living area. The side the faces the bathroom stayed white and was really blah. Now we can enjoy this glorious color inside and out!

To throw it back a bit, here’s where we started and then the progression of color!

What do you think? Would you have kept the lighter blue, or gone with a different color completely? We have been thinking about having one of those barn door styles put in between rooms, but we just haven’t got around to it yet. I can’t wait to slap this color on our exterior door come springtime, which can come anytime now. Although Winter has been fairly mild, I’m over it.

Bye Felicia.

I like the Thunderbird Blue but I do like the color you did last. It does give it a more distinct look that stands out better against the wall color w the design on it. I think that was the best choice. The Thunderbird Blue could work better if the wall was perhaps a darker color and that could make it pop and lighten it because it is a nice color! I love the idea of painting riom doors, nice tips also. Thank you

I liked thunderbird more based on the photos, BUT, I love the blue you chose. And I read this post 3 times and still failed to find what it is called. So…please? What’s that dark blue beauty called?

The dark blue is Hale Navy by Benjamin Moore. I didn’t even realize I hadn’t mentioned it, thanks for the heads up!
