Cinder Block Herb Garden 

Hey, hey! Happy Sunday! Are you guys out enjoying this gorgeous day? We’ve been outside since early this morning, first freezing at the +1 temperature & now enjoying the sunshine.

We’ve been out working lots in the yard the past few days trying to brainstorm how to maximize our garden space. Here’s what we’re working with.

In past years we’ve crammed carrots, peas, tomatoes, basil, rosemary, chives, oregano & sage into this 16′ x 2′ raised garden bed. It gets a little overgrown, especially when our tomato plants grow taller than the deck rail and want to fall over the front of the space.

If you follow me on Instagram then you already know we were playing around with some cinder blocks.

We had 7 blocks to play with and after a few different configurations decided this was what we would go with. We placed it in the corner of the yard where we had some space and it would go untouched by little hands and flying soccer balls.

Next step was to find some pots that actually fit in the holes. We ended up using the plastic pots that came with some shrubs we had purchased. I planted some oregano, sage, dill & basil.

Basil is by far our most used and favourite herb, we end up with so much of it at the end of the season! It’s so easy to store for future use, I usually use my dehydrator to dry it out and then store it in Mason jars to use over wintertime. In the past I’ve also put it in a plastic bag and froze it, it crumbles super easy when it’s frozen and you still maintain that fresh Herb taste!
        This is super convenient for growing oregano as well. Oregano is a very invasive herb and can quickly take over other plants in your garden if you don’t contain it. With it being in its own it can grown over the sides and not disturb anything else.

The dill is also on its own side so that it can grow tall and not overtake anything else. Basil LOVES sunshine so I made sure that they were near the top to get most sun exposure.

The rosemary and chives will still be planted in the raised garden but without all the other herbs it leaves room for more carrots and another tomato plant!  All that’s left is to make some cute markers for each pot!
