Hey. You. Yeah you! Long time no talk my friend.
How is it already October? Honestly, September flew by at mach speed & now I’ve got Christmas on my mind. Just kidding. Almost.
It’s been awhile since we’ve had a real good furniture makeover around here, so I’m SUPER excited to be sharing this one with you today. I snagged this beauty desk off a local buy and sell page and it originates from the rare IKEA tree. Ok, not so much rare, but it’s legit from a tree. And not the chopped, processed and pressed variety either. It’s a whopping 48″ wide, so I thought it would be perfect desk to get my craft on.
Using DecoArt’s Americana Decor Chalky finish paint in Everlasting and Refreshing, I gave the desk a shabby chic finish.
The desk was in great shape and needed no prep other than a light sand. I painted on two good coats of the Everlasting, followed by two coats of the Refreshing. To give it a mild distressed look I took a sanding block in a 100 grit and gave the whole thing a good sand down. I went over it again in a 150 grit to smooth the paint out even more and give it that nice soft chalky finish. The wood really sucked the paint up nicely and once I started sanding it down it helped make the grain pop out in various spots. To seal the paint, I used Rustoleum’s Chalked Clear Coat.
Awhile back I picked up some awesome wrapping paper from HomeSense. It’s fairly thick and came in some great patterns and I really wanted to incorporate one of the rolls into this project. So to add some contrast I picked the navy and white strip and covered the back of the desk in it. It really made the minty green pop that much more when it was in place!
I kept the original hardware, it was still in great condition and it helps anchor the look as a whole. I went a little more heavy handed with my sanding on the smaller drawers just to give them some more character. You can see the pops of white and wood under the minty green.
I did worry a bit when I first put the backing on the shelf. The stripes really stood out and seemed to drown out the mint color, but once I put the shelf on the desktop the colors balanced out well.
How freaking adorbs are those pencil crayons?! The flamingo is my fave for sure!
Hope you love it as much as I do!
