Retro Shelf Revamp

Each year the church ladies hold a large garage sale 3 doors down from us.

It’s a total win/win for me. I can scope out the goods before the sale starts, then sneak over on my way to work in the morning! I lucked out when I found this retro shelf there!

It was just sitting there, in all its retro glory, calling my name! This piece was definitely unique. The top was pressboard with a faux grain laminate top, which led me to assume that the whole thing was built that way. Once I started sanding it down I realised that the body was solid wood, only the top was laminate. Bonus!

I popped out the panel that was on the left side and debated recovering it. In order to do that I would have had to make a second one for the other side. The more I looked at it without the panels, the better I liked it. Thankfully, omitting the panels didn’t take away from the character of the piece.

All I needed was the right color to do the piece justice. Country Chic paint has a great selection of colors and when I saw Jitterbug, I immediately loved it. The name itself seems pretty fitting for a retro style shelf!

I applied 2 coats of Jitterbug using my 1.5″ Oval Brush from Country Chic. Once it was dried, I applied two coats of Top Coat to all but the back piece of the shelf. While that dried, I spray painted the legs in Krylon Dual Superbond in Gold .

Now why didn’t I use top coat on the back? I wanted to add some depth to the shelf using wallpaper. I’ve had this roll of wallpaper on hands for months and no real plan for it, so I was glad to finally pull it out! I cut the pieces down to size, making sure that the pattern lined up as I cut. I cheated and used Mod Podge to adhere it to the back of the shelf. This way I could easily steam it off if I needed to down the line.

The addition of the wallpaper, really made the teal pop. It really turned itself into a showstopper! I’m so pleased with how my living room looks now, I just need to buy a few pieces of chest furniture and then the transformation will be complete! It’s so exciting!

How perfect did that turn out!

The gold legs and gold shimmer of the wallpaper pair so well with the teal color of the body! The minty background is subtle enough that it does not take away from the bold color of the whole piece, but instead adds to it.

Remember what I started with?

Needless to say, this beauty has found a permanent spot in my living room. It adds the perfect pop of color and character to the space!

You can find so much more color inspiration over on Country Chic’s Instagram along with hovering over the colors on their website!
