I’m trying to hold on to the last straws of warm weather, so I was hoping that by posting about our littlest littles summer llama themed birthday party, I would feel warmer. It’s not working.
If I’m being honest, I’ve completely lost the wind in my sails when it comes to hosting kids parties. The oldest kid got the best of me party-wise. By the time the 3rd came along, all the gusto was gone. Terrible, I know. Luckily, we found some fun llama themed decorations at Wal-Mart and managed to pull together a fun party without breaking the bank!
The forecast for the day was supposed to be bright and sunny, but we woke to drizzling rain and gloomy looking skies. That put a major damper on our plans to pull out the slip & slide and water guns! Instead we opted for some crafting, the park, and then crossed our fingers for nice enough weather to beat the piñata up.
I found this great Llama Finger Puppet craft over at I Heart Crafty Things. I loved that it was simple enough for a bunch of 6 year olds to complete and I also had the majority of supplies on hand.
To save on time and preserve my patience, I pre cut all the pieces using the template from the tutorial. The kids had so much fun making and then decorating their llama’s.
They had a good laugh when I stuck some white poms on my llama’s head and called it the gramma llama. Ha, such a comedian! The old gramma llama was feeling pretty plain jane compared to what the kids came up with!
I think the biggest highlight of the party though was the piñata. The kids were bouncing off the walls before they even had a chance to take a swing. The piñata came from Wal-Mart as well, and matched the plates, napkins, cups, and tablecloth we purchased from there. Honestly, they make party planning so easy sometimes.
Would we even be Canadian if we didn’t use a hockey stick to get to the goods?! Let me tell you, no one is more determined than a kid swinging at a piñata! It didn’t take long before the candy and small toys were flying.
I took the easy way out and purchased an ice cream cake from Dairy Queen (again, 3rd child syndrome) instead of making the elaborate llama cake she picked out on Pinterest.
I can report though, that there were no complaints. Candy + ice cream = insane birthday fun when you are 6!
We did venture to the park for a bit and when the novelty wore off came back to the house and played some old fashioned games like egg on the spoon relays. You can’t go wrong with tried and true activities! Luckily 3 hours flew by with no tears, no injury and lots of laughs. The party wasn’t elaborate, nor was it planned down to the minute. By keeping it relaxed, I was able to actually enjoy it and not stress over minute things that in the end don’t even matter to a kid.
