Planked walls.
You either love them or you hate them. Its a trend that’s divided the internet and right when you think it may be making its way out the door, BOOM! Someone goes and paints it black, bringing it right back to the forefront of design.
If you follow along with my home adventures on Instagram, you’ll remember that I was having problems with a wall in my home. It was this wall.
I was tired of the arrows, so figured I would paint over it and all would be well with the world. Well, it all went to hell in a handbag (do people still say that?). The whole debacle is another story for another time. The solution is what I’m here to share today.
I had been eyeing up some peel & stick wallpaper by ScottLiving for quite awhile. It sat on the end bunker of the aisle I frequented for chalk paint at our local hardware store. So I walked pass it every couple of weeks, slowing my pace a tad more each time. 7 days before Christmas I took the plunge and bought a roll of the white planked design. Now the great thing about ScottLiving peel & stick wallpaper is that it is textured. This makes it look more realistic and not as flat as a standard design on a regular peel & stick.
The application was so simple. I measured my wall from the ceiling to the baseboard and added an inch to the length. I cut a strip and then applied as per the instructions. Easy peasy, right? I went ahead and cut a second strip, but when I went to apply it to the wall my plank lines did not match up. Lo and behold, every 3rd ‘plank’ was around 3mm thinner than the two above planks and below it. Insert immense frustration. I ended up having to buy a second roll to compensate for the wasted strip. I wanted the wallpaper to be as seamless as possible, so slicing and dicing and making it line up wherever I could wasn’t an option for me. The headache was worth it in the end!
Such a difference!
I’ve received so many questions asking what I used as material to plank the wall, that’s how realistic it looks. To touch it, you feel the raised wood grain and when you walk alongside it you can see the texture. It doesn’t look flat and dull and cleans like a dream. Fingerprints and smears of god knows what (thanks kids) come off, no problem. It hasn’t peeled anywhere, curled or lifted along any of the edges. It’s in a high traffic area and is exposed to quite a bit of sunlight, two factors that would play into its lifespan, but so far so good.
I’d say that’s a planked walls win for sure.
