A Skylander & Minecraft Birthday

Warning: This is a very birthday related and photo heavy post!

This past weekend we celebrated Carter 9th birthday. 9! I still can’t believe it. Over the years he’s a had a few interests that he’s been pretty focused on and those interests have carried through to his birthday “theme” of sorts. I never thought I’d be a birthday theme mom, but here I am – guilty as charged!

It all started with Skylanders….and the fact that I was pregnant with Ellie. I was totally feeling Susie Homemaker-ish and Supermom-like and decided that the kid needed a styled table and streamers and poofs and the whole damn thing. We opted to host the party at home that year and had around 11 7yr olds running around shooting each other with Nerf guns and brandishing Ninjago swords. It was a colossal GONG SHOW & I swore I’d never have it at our house again.

Here’s what our party looked like!

Awesome, right?! It was fun to put together and the boys all oooh’d and aaaah’d a sufficient amount to make me feel all Supermom again.

Well no sooner was Skylanders in…..then it was back out. Enter the child turning 8 and being obsessed with MINECRAFT. Complete shocker, I know. I never saw it coming either. Enter the not so theme obsessed mom….and a complete lack of anything Minecraft related party-wise.

If I was a super tech-savvy mom, I’d probably have arranged a game hour or something during the party, maybe get an mcpe server hosting and let the boys go crazy with the game and truly feel like it was a Minecraft party! No doubt they’d be delighted to play together for a while, but I didn’t even know how these things are done.

So, we had the party at the Fieldhouse where the boys could all play hockey and wear each other out so I didn’t go too crazy with the decorating. We stuck with the theme just for cake and the treats…..let me tell you, that’s the way to go!

I could not find ANYTHING Minecraft at the time & ended up making “creeper” sugar cookies, which turned out not too bad until they hit the bags! Oops. Some rice krispies squares made with cocoa krispies and super healthy green food coloring passed as earth blocks or whatever they’re called and “dynamite” glow sticks. Who doesn’t like a glow stick?

Can you guess what the birthday request was this year? I’ll give you a hint: it’s rated mature, involves guns & a super unimpressed mom. Check back tomorrow and I’ll tell you allllll about it!
