Fresh Mustard & Liquorice: A China Cabinet Makeover

I might sound like a broken record, but you guys. The makeover I’m sharing with you today is AMAZING. Honestly, I’ve  been exploring bolder hues on furniture and wondering why I didn’t do it sooner!

This poor china cabinet has been sitting in my garage for 18+ months. My plan from the start was to convert it to a TV cabinet….but what color do I go with? I was browsing through the color selection online at Country Chic Paint and kept going back to the Fresh Mustard Yellow. It was bold, it was bright, & it was not something I would normally choose!

The cabinet needed a thorough cleansing. It had accumulated an impressive amount of dust, saw dust and cobwebs in its extended garage stay. Although it had 3 panels, only one was a door that opened. All 3 were removed along with the shelves inside. Using wood filler, I filled all the holes and any other deficiencies I found. I removed the doors and drawers from the base along with all the hardware. Once it was stripped of all its ‘accessories’ I gave the whole thing a rough sand down.

One of my favourite things about this paint is the coverage you get. Yellow is such a finicky color to paint with, especially if you are painting over dark stained wood. I only needed two coats of paint for full coverage. I also did two coats of the Liquorice. The china cabinet looked amazing as it was, but I wanted the details to really pop. Using the Graphite glaze and a damp rag, I wiped glaze onto all the edges and detailed areas. This was my first time using glaze, so I was a touch nervous that I would end up ruining the whole thing. I checked out this tutorial and watched it a few times before making an attempt! Once I got the hang of it, it took no time at all.  I let the whole thing dry for a couple of days and then gave it two coats of Clear Coat.

I used a mix of old and new for the hardware on the cabinet. The pulls on the doors were ordered from D. Lawless Hardware, the drop pull and knobs are both original to the cabinet I spray painted them in a matte black spray paint to match the pulls on the doors.

Ok, enough explanations, are you guys ready?

Here she is!

The glaze picked up the wood grain of the cabinet and really added some beautiful character to it. I’m loving how the hardware pops against the yellow too!

I absolutely love the bold yellow color, it really adds life to the space!
